Almost two years ago, we took Wyatt to Project Run for a evaluation. Our main goal was to get Speech Therapy through this program since we thought he had a feeding issue. Little did we know that the evaluator picked up on a muscle issue. She referred us for PT. Someone had told me about Mrs. Sally and how wonderful she was. I have to admit I was a little skeptical on how Oxford could possibly have such a "wonderful" pediatric therapist. So in a moment of desperate need, we called for Mrs. Sally. I took Wyatt to his first appointment and I was sure Sally would be great. Little did I know how great she really was. Mrs. Sally has been a true God send in our lives. You could watch her interact with Wyatt and could tell that she really grew to love Wyatt. He loved her as well! She was optimistic about Wyatt's condition but she was very realistic. When we started Pt with her Wyatt was barely sitting up by himself. Although he was sitting up some, it was totally wrong! She gave us hope that Wyatt would walk but she didn't think it would be anytime soon. Maybe by the time he was 2 or 2.5 years old. With much determination on his part and an amazing therapist weekly, he walked at 19 months. It was a huge milestone that we all celebrated!
Fast forward to almost a year later and we are still doing weekly therapy. We continue to work on gross motor skills but nothing as monumental at walking! In early April, we heard devastating news that Mrs. Sally might be moving and I nearly had a stroke. Yes, I know this is very selfish. When you take an amazing therapist that loves your child away from a special needs mom, it is life changing. I tried not to panic as the move was not official. Mrs. Sally and her family decided that she would stay put for two more years. WHEW....relief! We had her for 2 more years. I thought that was the best news ever. Little did I know.
The very next Friday, we went to therapy as usual and half way through Mrs. Sally looked at me and told me her work was done. She said, "Wyatt has been a miracle and has truly made a miraculous recovery". He has come so far with his gross motor skills and she didn't think she could help him any more. I, of course cried, because I am always emotional and can't keep it together. I was so happy! When we discussed a plan two years earlier, discharge was never an option. No one expected Wyatt to be discharged from Physical Therapy. He has so much he needed to work on. I think it really put our situation into prospective when Sally told me, "I never get the chance to discharge my patients, you don't know how thrilled I am". Remember I told you how much she loved him...after she told me about discharging him, she grabbed him up, hugged him tight and said she would sure miss him. I really believe her. They loved each other! We are forever thankful for Mrs. Sally and her passion she has for kids with disabilities!
We continue to count our blessing with our sweet boy! He has more determination in his little body than most people can comprehend. He has the will to do whatever he thinks he needs to do (although it isn't always what Momma thinks).
With all of this being said, No, we are not done with therapies. We are still in speech and will start Occupational therapy in the coming weeks! We hope that our OT will be just as special as Mrs. Sally.
